I managed to locate the support page for AOL Desktop, and based on the available data, here's what I was able to extract from the page:
Paid members and some Free members can create up to seven Usernames, including your primary master Username, for your AOL account. The master Username is the one that you first used to sign on to your AOL account. You can create additional Usernames at no extra charge.
As you can see, it all depends on the membership status. It doesn't matter if you are a free or a paid member because the total number of username accounts is the same, just that it differs for some. You should be OK with 5 addresses.
AOL is promoting a fee-based "Gold" edition. Does this mean you can longer get AOL Desktop for free?

Yes, there still are free versions of AOL Desktop available for download both for Windows as well as for Mac. Actually, I've just installed the latest edition of the application (9.8.2) on my Windows 10 PC and both the download and the setup processes went on without any kind of issues. Furthermore, from what I've seen on the company's official website, AOL plans to run the two services side-by-side and not have the Gold edition replace the regular free one. However, if you need additional information regarding this topic, you can always contact the company's directly using one of the many options available on the support page.
I recommend you to update your AOL Desktop application to the last version which is AOL Desktop 9.7. It is free and offers many useful new features like: print preview, new browser settings, web files manager and viewer. You can find it on the AOL Inc official web page.
I am having connection problems with AOL Desktop 9.8.1. I would like to go back to 9.7 which was trouble free. My question is, since I am not upgrading, what do I check when asked are you upgrading or is this new? Will my email filing cabinet transfer to an older version and if not what should I look out for so I do not lose those saved emails and sites?

You can download the streaming installer for AOL Desktop using the download page for this application on Software Informer. Access the link below and then download version 9.7. I recommend making some kind of backup in the current version of AOL for your emails, but as long as they're on the servers, then you can simply uninstall the version on your computer and then reinstall the previous one. Add your account, and the emails will be shown again from the cloud. After installation, put in your older email, don't create a new one.
The chat rooms feature has been changed by AOL. The new version of the desktop does feature chat rooms, but they're divided somehow and AOL created a FAQ page which provides all the necessary information related to chat rooms and how to connect with them.

You should change the screen resolution of your display. In most of the cases, the apps running on the screen will adjust themselves to fit on the screen or you could press the Windows + P and use different displaying options, then switch it back and again the windows will re-arrange themselves automatically.
I wouldn't recommend tampering with the configuration files, because in the end you'll have to reinstall the application again.
I wish to download AOL 9.0 to a new PC so that I can sign into my account for all my favourites, mail and address book. How do I do this without a disc?
